Friday,May 27,2005 Posted: 06:35 BJT(2235 GMT)
On May 22, on his way back to China after wrapping up the official good-will visit to the four Latin American countries, Jia Qinglin, Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) met with Laisenia Qarase, Prime Minister of Fiji in Nadi.

Jia conveyed the cordial greetings and best wishes of Premier Wen Jiabao to Qarase and Qarase expressed thanks and asked Jia to convey his kind greetings and best wishes to Premier Wen Jiabao.

Jia said that the Chinese and Fijian people enjoy a long history of friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1975, especially in recent years, the bilateral relations have been moving ahead steadily with constantly deepening political mutual trust, increasingly expanding economic and trade cooperation and sound communications and coordination in international affairs. In 2002 and 2004 separately China and Fiji issued the Joint Declaration and Joint Communiqué, outlining the principles and framework for the development of bilateral ties in the new century. At present the bilateral ties maintain a sound momentum of development and face new opportunities. The two countries have great potential of economic and trade cooperation and the cooperation prospects are promising. China attaches importance to relations with Fiji and expects to work with Fiji to take the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and follow the principles defined in the Joint Declaration and Joint Communiqué to continuously raise the China-Fiji friendly and cooperative relations to new levels.

Jia pointed out that the Taiwan questions affects China's core interest. China appreciates that the Fijian government adheres to the one-China policy and refrains from supporting "Taiwan independence" which it takes as the cornerstone of bilateral relations. China hopes that Fiji can continue to pursue the one-China policy and ensure the healthy and stable development of bilateral ties.

Qarase noted that in recent years Fiji and China have maintained high-level exchanges and Fiji benefits a lot from the development experience of China. The Fijian government thanks China for its assistance over the years. Fiji attaches great importance to the friendly and cooperative relations with China and expects to follow the principles defined in the Joint Declaration and Joint Communiqué to build up the existing sound relations between the two countries and further develop the mutually beneficial cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, tourism and fishery. Qarase reiterated that the Fijian government will continue to pursue the one-China policy.

On the same day Jia also met with Taito Waqavakatoga, President of the Fijian Senate.
